Stewardship of Serving

06-10-2018Weekly ReflectionFr. Francisco “Bing” Colasito

I was reflecting on how our first Stewardship of Serving season has progressed. Honestly, I’m a little saddened. We’re a loving, welcoming parish. I hear people say this all the time. And yet, we struggle to find parishioners willing to serve. I think to some extent this is a sign of the times. We’re living in a world that is focused on self. We need to break out of this way of thinking and remember our earthly days are a means to an ultimate end (heaven).

I’m writing this on Wed, May 30. The Gospel for today was Mk 10:32-45. Purely by happenstance this was the verse I referenced in last week’s bulletin. I’m going to take that as a sign.

Mark 10: 43-45: “Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

I ask you to reflect and pray on two points for the remainder of our Stewardship of Serving Season (Apr-Jun).

  • Notice that Christ doesn’t tell his apostles to be volunteers. He tells them they must be servants. Servants serve. This is different than volunteering. Volunteers lend a hand as it suits them. The servant’s desires are secondary to the master’s.
  • Building the Kingdom of God is a team sport. We all have God-given gifts and a God-appointed role to play on that team. Blessed John Henry Newman captures this in the quote below.

With this background ask yourself the following:

  • Do you have a servant’s heart?
  • Are you answering God’s call to do the work committed to you?
  • Could some of this committed work be here at St Rose?

God Bless, and once again, thank you to all who volunteer their time and talents to build the Kingdom of God here at St Rose.

John 12:26
