Word of Life

“Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me.” (Mk. 10:45)

The blind Bartimaeus’ cry among the crowd was a display of great faith in Jesus. He first experienced interior healing, when he began to publicly acknowledge that Jesus has the power to heal him. It is both a prayer and a profession of faith. This prayer has evolved through the centuries into a Christian tradition of the Jesus prayer. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” (CCC 2616)

In salvation history, the sinful condition of humanity in relation to Yahweh was depicted by the disease of blindness. In Jer. 31:7-9, God overcomes Israel’s blindness by His never failing love and reached out to them with a message of consolation and joy.

Examine our life, then, in prayer and profession of faith say, “Jesus, have pity on me…” and like Bartimaeus ask the Master to help us see the many blind spots we have... How well do we use our “side mirrors,” do we turn to Jesus before the many turns in our own journey of life?

Be in God,

Fr. Bing
