Encounter with God

This Sunday's readings present three different encounters with God. Elijah meets the Lord on Mount Horeb, the mountain of God. St. Paul, in his Letter to the Romans, encounters the Lord Jesus in the depths of his conscience. And the Apostle Peter, in his characteristic boldness, meets Jesus walking on the waters. Three different people, three different encounters with God. As we reflect on these stories, we are invited to examine our own personal encounter with the living God.

Jesus in the Midst

The multiplication of bread is the only miracle story found in all four Gospels. Here, Jesus feeds 5,000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish. The people are delighted by a deed they had never seen from their leaders. Yet, once their hunger is satisfied and their awe fades, they forget the true meaning of the event. Jesus teaches us to look beyond the surface, to reflect more deeply, and to discover the real treasure of life: Jesus in the midst of His people. “What is essential is invisible to the eye... The essential things in life are seen not with the eyes, but with the heart.”
